Surprise surprise! I’ve completed yet another cross stitch project – who would have thought, right? A few months have passed since I found this new hobby and I’m still thoroughly enjoying it. I even managed to infect my sister with this cross stitching bug, and now we’re stitching together! I flew back home for Easter holidays and my sister surprised me with a cross stitch kit that she had bought for me, and it was a perfect project for the holiday period. Let me present my latest completed cross stitch project – a vibrant hummingbird.
Similar to the previous kits I have bought, this set included everything I needed to cross stitch a beautiful hummingbird. It came with a plastic hoop, a blank aida, a couple of needles, a threader and yarn in assorted lengths and colours. And, of course, a leaflet with cross stitching instructions (great for beginners) and the diagram.
I love the threader included in these kits, it makes it super easy to thread a needle. I already have a few of those, as I get one with every new set I buy. I gave this one to my Mum who only had other types of threaders in her sewing supplies, much more fiddly to use, and was in awe of the one included in my cross stitch kit.
I quickly got started on stitching and completed both greens and the red part of the design.
Next, I moved on to orange, yellow and pale blue. It was super satisfying to watch my hummingbird cross stitch come to life.
After adding the darker blue and black areas, the beautiful hummingbird was almost completed!
All that was left were a few final touches – adding the details on the inside of each flower.
And just like that, the design was completed!
Overall, I think it was my favourite cross stitch project I’ve completed to date. The design was cute, and the colours were fantastic – bright and vibrant, they worked together so well. You may remember the colour fiascos from my parrot and bunny cross stitch endeavours. This time, none of that happened – phew!
The only issue I had was around the amount of yarn provided. Pre-assorted kits like this one are often bought by complete beginners, and it’s reasonable to assume that mistakes will happen. I managed to avoid any (almost feeling like a cross stitching pro now, ha!), but I still finished with no more than 2 inches left of both shades of green yarn. Had I made a mistake with those colours causing a little bit of wasted yarn, I would have run out yarn before completing the design. It would have been nice to have a little more wiggle room. They should have included a tiny bit more of each colour! Other than that, I loved working on this project.
I already have a couple more cross stitch sets waiting to be completed… so, until next time!
