Moving abroad 6 years ago taught me numerous things. One of them was realising just how different people’s dietary habits are between different countries, even when those countries are located in the same area of the world. History also plays a part in it – poorer nations tend to have very different diets than the richer ones. I grew up in Poland, in the 1990s. Now, Poland has caught up with the Western world and young people are well familiar with oat milk matcha lattes and similar staples of 21st century foods. But back in the 90s, things were much different. I recently thought back to my childhood and all of the meals that were part of my usual diet, and realised that a lot of my peers in the UK would be perplexed hearing about my childhood menu. So, I decided to share with you some of the meals that I used to eat regularly. I hope you find this list interesting!

We’ve been spoiled with a hot summer in London this year, but a couple of cooler days last week were a great reminder that autumn is slowly approaching. And to me, autumn is the time for cosy, warming, comfort meals. There are a few autumnal dishes that my Mum only made when the required ingredients were in season. One of such recipes are knedle – potato dumplings with plums. You can find a recipe for those on my blog. I’ve already made them this year, they are delicious! An example of a savoury autumnal meal that I’ve always loved is leczo – a bell pepper stew. So a few days ago, I decided to recreate it. Today, I’m bringing you a recipe for Silesian potato dumplings, known in Poland as Kluski Śląskie – a traditional potato recipe, part of the traditional Sunday dinner in the south of Poland. It’s a staple in many homes to this day! Almost everyone loves potatoes, one of the most versatile vegetables, used all around the world. We all know chips, roast potatoes and mashed potatoes, but did you know that you can also serve your potatoes as dumplings? This recipe is similar to Italian gnocchi, but Silesian potato dumplings are used as a starchy side to meat dishes, rather than served in sauce. They’re naturally gluten-free, which is a great alternative for those with gluten intolerance. They’re incredibly quick and easy to make. It’s a great way to reuse any leftover potatoes!

It is recommended that we eat fish twice a week, including one serving of oily fish, but a lot of people in the Western world fail to meet that recommendation. It’s simple and quick, though requires a tiny bit of advance planning to let the fish marinade in the fridge.

Waffles are one of my favourite holiday treats, there’s no doubt. I have lots of childhood memories that include enjoying waffles in the seaside. I even lost my first tooth when eating one! We also enjoyed waffles during family cycling trips in a large park near my hometown when I was a child. All of my family loved waffles, but whenever we tried to make them at home, it was a failure. We tried to find the perfect recipe for years, and after lots of miserable attempts that yielded pancake-like, flat and soggy waffle wannabes, we found it. I don’t actually own a waffle maker myself, but I made waffles with my sister when I last visited my family. This recipe is simple and ready in minutes!
