Today, I’d like to share yet another tiny cross stitch project I’ve recently completed. And if you’ve been following my sewing adventures and think the design looks somewhat familiar… well, there’s a reason for it! A few months ago, I shared a hummingbird project, which remains one of my favourites to this day. It featured a cute bird inside a floral wreath, all kept in bright shades of yellow, orange, red, blue and green. Recently, I randomly saw a mini cross stitch kit in a shop, and it instantly reminded me of that past design. So of course, I had to buy it!
Contents of the kit
As always, let’s start by having a look at the contents of the kit. It’s different than all the previous kits I had bought, because it’s not just a cross stitch set – it’s a card making set, that includes a cross stitched insert. The package contained a small, blank aida, yarn in assorted colours, a needle, a threader, a leaflet with instructions, an envelope and pieces of folded white cardboard, to act as a base for the card. All of this cost me just £1! I bought this set at The Works.

Starting off
I’m used to working with large canvases and not having to worry about placing my design right in the centre. However, the aida included in this kit was small and I needed to make sure the whole design fit in it. I counted the squares and started sewing the yellow blocks, before moving to orange and red.

Blue and green
I really enjoyed working on this project, with all the colours being so vibrant and fresh. I quicky noticed that the amount of yarn included in the kit was extremely generous – you could easily make at least three hummingbirds with the yarn provided! It’s great if you’re a beginner and make mistakes that cause you to lose some yarn. Before I knew it, the hummingbird had all the blue and green details completed.

Final details
Finally, it was time to finish the design with the brown details: eye, beak and feet. The whole project only took me a couple of hours to complete. It’s tiny, but cute! I decided against gluing it onto the card blank.

A tale of two hummingbirds
Now, it was time to compare this tiny floral hummingbird with my past project. As you can see, it’s almost exactly the same, just mirrored and smaller! Even all the colours on the bird are in the same places. It makes me wonder if one brand stole the design from the other? Or perhaps they both used the same source image for inspiration? I’ll never know!
