Thick Frozen Smoothie Bowl [High Protein]

Hey smoothie lovers! Today, I’ve got a recipe that’s as cool as a cucumber – well, actually, it’s cooler because it’s a frozen smoothie bowl! If you’re craving something refreshing and packed with goodness, you’re in the right place. This frozen delight is not only delicious but also super easy to make. Let’s dive into the recipe!

With summer just around the corner, this has been my favourite thing to make recently. Especially after a workout, when I crave something cooling, refreshing and nutritious. This frozen smoothie bowl has everything: thick, spoonable consistency and divine flavour. It’s also packed with protein, fibre and vitamins. Delicious! This frozen yoghurt style thick smoothie bowl is a great healthy alternative to ice cream on a hot day. Give it a try!

Ingredients for a tropical frozen smoothie bowl

  • 90g frozen mango
  • 90g frozen raspberries
  • 1/2 frozen sliced banana
  • 150g thick high protein low fat yoghurt, fridge temperature (e.g. skyr or Fage in the UK)
  • 100ml plant based milk, fridge temperature
  • 1 teaspoon chia seeds
  • 1 generous teaspoon peanut butter
  • a handful of spinach or other greens (optional)
  • chia seeds and fresh fruit for garnish (optional)

How to make a thick frozen smoothie bowl

Start by putting your empty bowl in the fridge. This will help keep the frosted smoothie cold and thick while you eat it.

Take the mango out of the freezer and leave it at room temperature for about 30 minutes. You can skip this step if you’re absolutely sure that your blender can handle frozen fruit. Most machines will struggle with that, and partially defrosting the mango will help.

Put all ingredients in the blender. When adding peanut butter, try to avoid it touching the sides of the blender – it will stick to them.

If you want to, you can add a handful of greens, e.g. spinach. This will add even more nutrients to the already rich smoothie without changing the taste. However, keep in mind that adding greens will alter the colour of your smoothie bowl and make it a bit muddy-brown. Skip the greens if you’re after aesthetics 😊.

Blend all ingredients until they’re well combined and there aren’t any chunks of fruit left. The total time will completely depend on your blender. Check the smoothie occasionally and stir if some of the fruit stick to the side of the blender. If your blender seems to struggle with frozen ingredients, scroll down for tips.

What to do if the blender gets stuck

Ideally, to make a frozen smoothie bowl you should use a top quality blender than can handle frozen fruit like it’s soft butter. Sadly, not all of us have a blender of that quality – I don’t! If your blender gets stuck, just wait a few minutes (frozen fruit will soften a little during that time), then stir the mixture and try blending it again. It might take a few attempts to fully blend all ingredients, but don’t give up!

Picking smaller chunks of frozen fruit from the bag may also help. The bigger the pieces, the longer they will take to warm up and the harder it will be for your machine to crush them.

Bon Appetit!

Serve your frozen smoothie in a chilled bowl. Garnish it with a sprinkle of chia seeds and fresh fruit of your choice.

Enjoy!
