One of my favourite things about living in London is how diverse it is in terms of landscape and things to do. You may live in a metropolis with nearly 10 million inhabitants, but if you fancy a taste of the countryside, it’s just around the corner. When I discovered London urban farms, I was over the moon and they quickly became some of my top go-to places on a chilled Saturday morning. Today, I wanted to share with you one of my personal favourite places in London – Mudchute Farm.
Where is Mudchute Farm and how to get there
Mudchute Farm is located in the heart of East London, just a stone’s throw from Canary Wharf – a skyscraper filled business district. It’s also close to Greenwich, although on the other side of the Thames. If you’re by the Cutty Sark, you can take the footpath tunnel under the Thames to get to Mudchute Farm.
There are a few DLR train stations near Mudchute Farm (Crossharbour, Mudchute and Island Gardens being the closest). You can also get to Mudchute Farm by bus.

How much does it cost to visit Mudchute Farm?
Visiting Mudchute Farm is free! However, if you’d like to support the farm and its animals, you can leave a donation or purchase animal feed.

Can you feed the animals at Mudchute Farm?
Yes, you can! If you’d like to get close with the animals, you can purchase grass pellets at the Farm’s office. The sheep and goats love them and will devour the pellets with the speed of light. The animal feed is sold in striped white and pink paper bags, and as soon as you wave the bag, the animals will come running towards you!
Please remember that you can only feed the animals grass pellets purchased at the farm! Supermarket-bought vegetables are not suitable for the farm animals to eat, and we don’t want them to get ill. And of course, don’t even consider offering the goats muffins or pretzel sticks. Yes, you’d be surprised how many visitors deem highly processed human food to be suitable for sheep, despite signs listing the rules hanging all around the farm.

When is Mudchute Farm open
The farm is typically open every day from morning till early afternoon. Check out the farm’s website for up to date information about opening times and facilities: https://www.mudchute.org/.

What animals can you find at Mudchute Farm
Mudchute Farm is home to a variety of animals, including sheep, goats, cows, pigs, ducks, chickens, parrots, rabbits, donkeys peacocks, and more.
Although not officially Farm’s inhabitants, there are also plenty of squirrels hoping to get some delicious nuts. They are absolutely fearless, be warned! I’ve had a squirrel jump onto my sleeve from a fence and then run circles on my back (I was wearing a winter coat so avoided any scratches). Hilarious, but also a bit terrifying.

Are there other farms in London?
Yes! You can find many urban farms scattered around London. I have also visited Vauxhall City Farm and Stepney Farm. However, Mudchute Farm is the king of London farms – it’s by far the largest and has the widest variety of animals.

You should have seen the expression on my sister’s face when the cow licked the full length of her jacket’s sleeve 😂 That creature was ravenous for grass pellets!
