DIY Mini Cross Stitch Kit – Strawberries – Beginner Friendly Crafts

In 2024, I discovered a new hobby: cross stitching. I finished countless projects, mainly buying assorted kits with original designs and all necessary supplies. My final cross stitching endeavour of the year turned out to be the biggest disaster of all times – I ran out of three colours of yarn! You can read about that worst cross stitch kit ever in this post. So, starting the first project of 2025, I hoped to avoid any problems. Luckily, this small strawberry design was a complete success!

Contents of the kit

Let’s take a look at the contents of the kit, shall we? It included a plastic embroidery hoop, a blank, white aida, yarn in assorted, vibrant colours, a couple of needles, a threader and a leaflet with the diagram and instructions. Not bad for £1.99!

By the way – can you see the small font message on the price label? It says ‘do not sell to under 18’s’. Whilst I completely understand the restrictions when it comes to selling sharp objects – I was previously ID’d when buying a vegetable peeler – I was perplexed to see that notice on a cross stitch kit. Did they classify the tiny, blunt cross stitching needles as dangerous?

Starting off

I was eager to start cross stitching again, after the Christmas break. This refreshing, vibrant design seemed perfect for this time of year! It may only be January, but I’m already looking forward to the spring weather and I’m happy to see the days get longer.

I rushed into cross stitching, starting with the darkest red yarn. It wasn’t long until both strawberries started to come to life.

Red – done!

Without wasting any time, I then proceeded to sewing the other shades of red, from the darkest to the lightest. I really like how multi dimensional this design is. With just four colours, it achieved a nice level of depth and portrayed shadows and light reflections.

Blue and yellow details

Once the red parts of the strawberries were finished, I moved on to sewing the small blue and yellow details around the fruit. I suppose they might be tiny flowers? Soon enough, all of them were in place.

Stitching the leaves

Finally, it was time to start sewing the green stems and leaves of the strawberries. I started with the darker shade of green.

Then, I moved to the lighter shade of green and completed the design!

Final thoughts

I had lots of fun working on this small project! It was great to fill my days with family time over the holidays, but I missed my little hobby and looked forward to sewing again. The vibrant design was great for gloomy January days, and I’m glad that this time, the kit included enough yarn for the whole project. I already have a big stash of DIY cross stitch kits waiting to be sewn, and I’m sure that my cross stitching journey will continue in 2025. So, keep an eye out for more cross stitching posts in the future!
