7 Most Bizarre Alarm Clocks

7 Most Bizarre Alarm Clocks

Do you like to sleep in? Do you often have trouble getting up in the morning and abuse the snooze button? You’re not alone! There are plenty of strange, interesting or even funny methods to force yourself to get out of bed and prevent sleeping in. There are also gadgets supposed to help with that. Let’s have a look at both!

One of the most peculiar stories I’ve heard about methods people use to force themselves out of bed was presented to me by my dad. One of his former employees was, as she herself admitted, absolutely horrible at getting up in the morning. So, in order to make sure he was up in time, early enough to make it to work, she’d always set her alarm on her phone, then put the phone on top of a tall wardrobe (where she couldn’t reach without a chair) and take the chair to another room. That rather complicated procedure was the only way she was able to ensure that she doesn’t snooze her alarm forever. Complicated or not – it was effective for sure, as my dad believes she never ended up late.

Personally, I’m on the opposite side of the spectrum. I don’t think I’ve ever used the snooze button in my life. As soon as the alarm goes off, that’s it – I’m out of bed. Not too happy, definitely not feeling relaxed and full of energy, but still – out of bed. Which is rather interesting, seeing that I get up long before dawn and – biologically being an owl and feeling great staying up late at night – on a day off I’m able to sleep until noon. However, I’ve always been amazed by the creativity, ingenuity and inventiveness of brands which come up with the most bizarre alarm clocks for heavy sleepers. And, truth be told, I’m always tempted to try some of them out myself, despite having no issues with getting up!

Here are 7 of the most bizarre alarm clocks I’ve seen:

1. Clocky – alarm clock on wheels

Bizarre alarm clocks - clocky

An alarm clock equipped with a set of large wheels, ready to start running when the alarm is about to go off? Sound like a great idea for those who tend to hit ‘snooze’ and go back to sleep. With Clocky (quite a cute name by the way, isn’t it?), you’ll first need to get out of bed and catch it. There’s a good chance that you won’t get back into bed afterwards!

2. Sonic Bomb – extra loud alarm clock with flashing lights and a bed shaker

Bizarre alarm clocks - sonic bomb

This alarm clock seems to make use of every possible sense. Hearing? Check! It screams really loudly. Vision? Check! Flashing lights are there, ready to go off when needed. It even has a bed shaker, in case the previous two aren’t effective enough! This really seems like a heavy duty alarm clock for really heavy sleepers. It might be a bit over the top for most people, but it’s not entirely pointless. As it’s mentioned in its description, this device can be a good option for people with disabilities, who can’t rely on the sound of regular alarm clocks. If you know an elderly person with impaired hearing, in need of an alarm clock – this one might be right for them!

3. Screaming Meanie – advertising themselves as the loudest alarm clock you can find

Bizarre alarm clocks - screaming meanie

This one looks way less spectacular than the previous two, but – just like #2 on this list – it may be a great option for elderly people or those sleeping in loud environments. This alarm clock advertises itself as the loudest alarm clock you can possibly find. Making sounds at 120 dB, it’s as loud as a jet plane taking off!

4. Flying Helicopter

Bizarre alarm clocks - helicopter

This novelty alarm clock, similarly to aforementioned Clocky, forces you to get out of bed and do light exercise in order to get out of bed. This time, it’s the top part of the device flying off as the alarm starts ringing. In order to turn the alarm off, you need to find that part and put it back where it belongs!

5. A small, wearable alarm clock that wakes you up with an electric zap

Bizarre alarm clocks - electric zap

A rather drastic option, for those who really struggle and really want to turn things around. This little device, looking like a smart band, will shock you in order to wake you up! It’s advertised as a wake up trainer – and that’s because it’s supposed to teach your brain when to wake up (which is moments before the alarm is expected to go off and zap you). That way, you should be able to wake up naturally, in time to turn the alarm off before it sends a shocking impulse. Any volunteers to check if it actually works that way…?

6. Ruggie – carpet alarm clock

Bizarre alarm clocks - ruggie

That’s right – an alarm clock in a rug. A milder form of Clocky and the helicopter. It requires minimum amount of physical activity to turn it off – you just need to get out of bed and stand on the rug with both feet.

7. Alarm clock with sunrise simulation

Bizarre alarm clocks - sunrise clock

Last – but by no means least – is this ingenious alarm clock with sunrise simulation. Out of all models on this list, this is the one I’m most tempted to buy. I may not have problems with getting up, but I don’t feel particularly happy and energized when I do. This alarm clock promises to wake you up gradually and naturally over a course of 30 minutes – by faking sunrise with its built-in lamps and playing sounds of nature. At the end of the process you should be awake and – most importantly – full of energy, with the alarm clock tricking your brain into thinking that it was woken up by natural signals from the environment. Does it work? I’ve no idea. But I’m really tempted to find out.

Do you have trouble getting up in the morning? Do you have a special method of forcing yourself out of bed? And if you’re a heavy sleeper – do you think any of the alarms above would help you? Let me know what you think!

  1. These clocks are so weird! I like clock on wheels. I don’t have trouble getting out of bed ever but do like to have the iPad handy to look at IG, WP and email.

    1. I wonder how many injuries inventions like that are responsible for. There must have been some fun conversations.
      ‘What happened to you?’
‘Broke my leg while chasing my alarm clock.’
Now that makes me think, what a brilliant excuse to stay in bed. Get injured while trying to turn an alarm clock off and have a reason to actually stay in bed for not a few minutes but even a few days!

  2. What an interesting post! I’m a heavy sleeper (but not so heavy that I’d need one of these clocks lol) and I use this app ‘Alarmy’ which forces me to solve math equations or take a photo to shut it up. Working well so far x

    1. Oh that’s interesting! Though I can imagine for many people having to solve equations while trying to wake out would be double the nightmare haha (not only do you need to get out of bed, but also have to use maths which many people hate)

  3. Well, I never had to depend on an alarm to get up, I have a biological alarm for 04:30 am, though if I had problems waking up, I would prefer a Taser Alarm, Imagine how “shocking” your morning would be πŸ˜‚

        1. Yes, that’s true, but I kind of prefer being productive in different hours ^^ I’m an owl and feel much better working at night, so getting up early is a real struggle.

    1. Yes, the sunrise one seems amazing, doesn’t it?
If you click on the header above its photo (or the photo itself), it will take you to Amazon’s listing of this clock, where you can check the price! They have various models and the price may be different in your country, so it’s best to check yourself. πŸ™‚
